| Location: South Africa The next turn-off south from the N2, near the western shore of the Knysna lagoon, leads to the village of Belvidere with its very English village green and its unusual Holy Trinity church built in the Norman style of the 12th century. The story of the church is as poignant as its ambience is grand. In 1833 Captain Thomas Duthie of the Seaforth Highlanders married Caroline, daughter of George Rex, pioneer developer of Knysna, and bought from his father-in-law a tract of land on the western shore of the Knysna lagoon where he built Belvidere House and developed his estate to which he retired in 1834. With the assistance of other families in the region he also built this little church, which was consecrated by Bishop Robert Gray in 1855. The stained glass windows, added much later, were salvaged from Britain's Coventry Cathedral which was bombed out during the Second World War.
